Welding is an academic discipline concerned with the study of metal fabrication, weld metal transfer and the use of different shielding gases. The skills developed in this discipline will include metallurgy, print reading, design and creation, multi-position welding, weld joint design, use of common welding applications and basic material science.

The Department is currently the only fully integrated metallurgical engineering department at tertiary level in South Africa. It exposes future professional metallurgical engineers to the full scope of the minerals/ metals discipline, ranging from minerals processing, through pyro- and hydroextractive metallurgy, to physical metallurgy, and welding and corrosion metallurgy. Metallurgy, art and science of extracting metals from their ores and modifying the metals for use. Metallurgy customarily refers to commercial as opposed to laboratory methods. It also concerns the chemical, physical, and atomic properties and structures of metals and the principles whereby metals are combined to form alloys.

The patterns in which atoms are arranged in the solid state determine properties. These arrangements can be manipulated by altering parameters such as the chemical composition, temperature and magnetic field. A phase transformation is a change in the pattern of atoms. We work on phase transformations and the relationship between structure and properties. AWS metallurgy courses cover everything from the nature of metals to the properties that affect weldability. These courses are ideal for both students and professionals who want to learn or reacquaint themselves with the nature of metals, the metallurgical phenomena involved in welding, and the effects of these phenomena on the properties of welded materials.
